Updates, Updates, Updates

The world doesn't sit still, and neither should your computer. It's generally a good idea to keep it 'up-to-date'.

You hear it all the time - keep your computer current with regular updates. Here are a few important reasons that a hardware or software manufacturer will issue updates:

  • To fix issues discovered with a device such as the video controller, the USB ports, etc.
  • Responding to a vulnerability in the operating system to a virus.
  • Improving the way a piece of software, such as a word processor, works.

Should you update? The necessity to update is usually based on the following reasons:

  • Definitely - Being proactive about preventing attacks from viruses.
  • Generally - To fix a problem that you are currently experiencing.
  • Maybe - Going around the whole system in an attempt to fix a vague problem.

Where do you obtain an update? Today, most updates are found on the manufacturer's website. Some sites require some sort of registration (name and password) to access these files.
