Manage Your Disks [Windows]

Have you ever needed to know which physical disk your E: volume is on? Or maybe you want to change the volume's drive letter, delete a partition, or perform some other advanced disk-oriented task.

The Disk Management tool in Microsoft Windows provides all of the basic, and not-so-basic, information you need about the hard disks and data volumes on your Microsoft Windows-based computer.

To use the Disk Management tool:

  • Choose Start -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management, then select Disk Management under Storage, or
  • Choose Start -> Run -> Open: diskmgmt.msc -> 'OK'.

There is a lot here, and it's not just for hard disks. Select a disk and look for options under the "Action" menu. You could change the drive letter of a CD-ROM, for instance.

Hey! It can't be overstressed that the Disk Management tool is for intermediate to advanced users. Changing drive letters and keep programs from operating, and improper use can erase data!
