A Different type of Computer "Protection"

We all are protecting our computers with anti-virus software, anti-malware software, and even firewalls. However, there is another type of protection that is often overlooked ...insurance.

Most homeowner's and renter's policies offer protection for your computer. Unfortunately, your computer may be covered as part of an electronic equipment grouping that includes your television, stereo, and VCR. Furthermore, many insurance companies have dollar limits for electronic equipment around $5000.00.

Here are a few things to consider to financially protect your computer:

  • Check your current policy to ensure that you have adequate insurance to cover all of your computers in addition to your home electronics.
  • If you have a dedicated business office in your home, you may need a business property insurance policy.
  • Computers depreciate quickly over time. Consider a replacement cost policy rather than an actual cash value policy.
  • Notebook computers are increasingly popular. Make sure that your notebook computer is covered when it is used away from your home.

Remember, a small investment upfront may save a large expense later.
