Checking Cables

By the time many of us get around to moving or cleaning a desktop computer, or going mobile with a notebook computer, its too late to discover that you can't connect it back up!

"Oops. I can't put my system back together!" This is many people's lament if even a single cable falls out of the back of the computer. So try the tips below.

Label each end of your computer's cables by:

  • Best: Make a pair of descriptive "flags" using a Brother P-Touch label, and stick one around the cable, one near each end.
  • Simple: Just wrap colored vinyl tape near each cable end. Then, don't forget to create a short document describing where each colored end goes!

Finally, neatly route your cables around your computer and workspace using cable ties. Notebook computer users may want to invest in some of the new small, self-coiling, cables.
